Youth Swim Lessons (Ages 6-12)

Safety Around Water is a grant-funded program that teaches children the important basic skills needed to stay as safe as possible around the water. A free program for the first 6 participants per session.

Ages 6-14.

At the Y, we believe everyone should have the chance to learn how to stay safe around water:

1. Learning to be safe around water is a life skill. Today, fewer than half of all Americans say they know how to swim. The Safety Around Water program is designed to help change this reality.

2. Learning to be safe around water builds a sense of achievement. Overcoming a fear of water and mastering skills in the pool build confidence and competence. Safety Around Water, like all Y programs, helps individuals reach their full
potential

In Stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

Things to know:

• The ratio for this class is 5:1
• Cancellation Policy: All swim lesson’s are non-refundable once the session has started.
• If participant is absent from a class there  is no rescheduling or make-up lesson.
• Come ready to swim with swim attire and a towel to dry off.
• Registration for the following month is opened 2 weeks prior to the start date.
• All lessons are 25 minutes in water instruction and instructors take the last 5 minutes of the 30 minutes to discuss with parent’s their child’s progress
• We reserve the right to reassign the swim instructor.
• Special request for instructor’s gender and or gender identity are not guaranteed.

What to expect on the 1st day:

• Arrive with sufficient time to be dressed and ready for class.
• Once you are ready for class head over to the pool which is located at the back of the facility
• If you are early to your class on the first day of their class instructors will call roll. Once instructors have called out roll call they will head over to the area of the pool where they will be teaching the class.
• If you did not hear your child’s name be called please ask a staff for assistance. If your name or your child’s name is not on the roster we ask that you go to the front desk and bring a copy of your receipt.
• After the 1st day of class it is the expectation that the parent/participant will walk over child to the where the class sis being held.

For children who have not had any swimming lessons, or who may be fearful of the water. These swimmers cannot swim independently on their backs.

Main Skills Taught: Working on comfort with the face in the water, being submerged, front and back float, kicking movements, introduction to treading water, and introduction to front and back-crawl.

Teacher-to-student ratio 1:4.

What to expect on the 1st day:

• Rosters will be posted for each class.  There will be colored mats that coincide with the rosters so you know which colored mat your child is to go to.
• Once your child is on the mat you can go to the assigned parent seating and the instructor will get the kids.
• If your child’s name is not on the roster we ask that you go to the front desk and bring a copy of your receipt.
• After the 1st day of class, it is the expectation that the parent will drop their child off at the appropriate colored mat and go to the parent-assigned seating area.

Students in Stage 4 develop stroke techniques in front crawl and back crawl and learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

This is for children with a basic knowledge of the front and back crawl, but are not able to swim full lengths of the pool. Has passed Stage 3, or has been assessed by authorized staff.

Main Skills Taught: Over-arm front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl for one length of the pool. Jumping into deep water and swimming to other side of the pool. As well as an introduction to the breaststroke and butterfly stroke.

Teacher-to-student ratio 1:5.

Students in Stage 5 work on stroke technique and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

For children who have a solid grasp on all four swim strokes, but are still working on technique. Must have passed Stage 4, or assessed by authorized staff.

Main Skills Taught: Over-arm front crawl with rotary breathing and back crawl. Jumping into deep water and swimming to other side of pool. Continued development of the breaststroke and butterfly stroke.

Teacher-to-student ratio 1:6.

In Stage 6, students refine stroke techniques on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

Stage 6: Stroke Mechanics

For children who have a full understanding of all four strokes and are working their way up into the swim team level.

Main Skills Taught: Proper turns for all four strokes, stroke endurance and stamina, proper swim etiquette, and a basic understanding of swim terminology.
