Preschool Swim Lessons (Ages 3-5)

Swimming is a life skill as well as great exercise and a challenging sport. The Y offers swim lessons for all ages so we can all safely enjoy the pleasures of an aquatic environment. Preschool Age Swim Lessons teaches kids ages 3-5 water adjustment, basic swimming competency, and benchmark skills.

 


Stage 1 - Water Acclimation

Students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water in Stage 1. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming. Skills practiced include blowing bubbles and submerging under water, entering and exiting the water, back floats and front tow. Once children are comfortable putting face in water and holding on to wall independently they can move to Stage 2.

  • The ratio for this class is 4:1
  • Classes run rain or shine.
  • Cancellation Policy: All swim lessons are non-refundable once the session has started.
  • If the participant is absent from a class, there is no rescheduling or make-up lesson.
  • Come ready to swim with swim attire and a towel to dry off.
  • Registrations fill up quickly and are on a first-come-first-serve basis. Please plan accordingly for future sessions.
  • Enrollment does not roll over each month. You must register your child for each monthly session.
  • All lessons are 30 minutes in water instruction.
  • Progress reports are given at the 6th lesson. If you want a progress report before that, please speak with your instructor one-on-one.

What to expect on the 1st day:

  • Open swim before and after lessons is reserved for Facility Members only
  • Facility members who choose to swim prior to class or after must accompany children in water unless they have passed the swim skills test and have a green band
  • Arrive with sufficient time to be dressed and ready for class.
  • Once you are ready for class, head over to the pool and check in for class. The Lifeguard will let you know where your class is located in the pool and who the instructor will be.
  • Class levels and times are posted at the lanes.

Stage 1-Water Acclimation

For children who cannot swim by themselves, have never had lessons before or are fearful of the water. For ages 3 to 5 years.

Main Skills Taught: bubble blowing, supported front and back glide, kicking movements and introduction to arm movements, as well as how to climb in and out of a pool.

Things to know:

  • The ratio for this class is 4:1
  • Cancellation Policy: All swim lessons are non-refundable once the session has started.
  • If participant is absent from a class there is no rescheduling or make-up lesson.
  • Come ready to swim with swim attire and a towel to dry off.
  • Registration for the following month is opened on the 15th of each month (ex. Registration for August opens July 15th).
  • All lessons are 25 minutes in water instruction and instructors take the last 5 minutes of the 30 minutes to discuss with parent’s their child’s progress.
  • We reserve the right to reassign the swim instructor.
  • Special request for instructor’s gender and or gender identity are not guaranteed.

What to expect on the 1st day:

  • Arrive with sufficient time to be dressed and ready for class.
  • Once you are ready for class head over to the pool which is located at the back of the facility
  • If you are early to your class on the first day of class, instructors will call roll. Once instructors have called out roll call they will head over to the area of the pool where they will be teaching the class.
  • If you did not hear your name called please ask a staff for assistance. If your name or your child’s name is not on the roster we ask that you go to the front desk and bring a copy of your receipt.
  • After the 1st day of class it is the expectation that the parent/participant will walk over to where the class is being held.

Stage 2 - Water Movement

In Stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Skills taught include front glide, back float, rolling from front to back, front crawl and back glide. Children should be able to independently jump in water, hold position on wall, exit water and swim-float-swim for 10 yards assisted before moving to Stage 3.

Stage 2-Water Movement

By stage 3, children start to independently swim and roll from front to back using front crawl. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action. Children should be able to swim,float, swim for 15 yards before moving to Stage 4.

Stage 4 - Stroke Introduction
